A Florida bakery accused an Uber driver of stealing 400 cinnamon rolls, only to later discover that the driver had been detained by ICE.
TheNerdStash previously reported that Roll & Dough accused an Uber driver of stealing about 350 cinnamon rolls worth about $3,000 after a delivery to a farmers market failed. The bakery said the Uber trip lasted about four hours and 40 minutes, during which its team repeatedly attempted to contact the driver but received no response.
Roll & Dough was initially charged $205 for the delivery and said the incident resulted in losses of around $3,100. After receiving a partial refund from Uber, the bakery later received a full refund and reported the incident to police, with the owner saying she had pressed charges against the driver. The bakery has now provided an update.
It was later revealed that the Uber driver had not stolen the approximately 400 cinnamon rolls as initially believed. Instead, the driver, identified as Ivan, was reportedly detained by ICE while on his way to deliver the order. Afterward, the bakery’s owner shared a video addressing the situation. She began it by saying that she did not support ICE.
She then showed pictures related to the delivery. Since the owner had filed a police report, she clarified that Ivan was detained while delivering the order. It was not because of the report she filed. According to the information she had received, Ivan took a wrong turn on the highway. Border Patrol subsequently detained him.
The owner added that their initial narrative was based on the information they had at the time. Once detectives informed them that the driver had been detained, they deleted the video accusing him of stealing and corrected the record.
“I’m deeply sorry for Ivan and his family experiencing this because this is something that no family should experience whatsoever,” she said. She also explained that the bakery released a public statement. They pledged to donate to Ivan’s fund if they could contact his family. She ended the video by reiterating that she did not support ICE.
In the statement mentioned by the owner, Roll & Dough said it initially believed nearly 400 cinnamon rolls had been stolen during an Uber delivery. This was after the order disappeared and the driver could not be reached. The business later learned from Sunrise Police detectives that Ivan had been detained by immigration authorities while making the delivery. According to the statement, a family member found the cinnamon rolls in his vehicle. They delivered them to police, allowing the bakery to recover them five days later.
The business apologized for initially characterizing Ivan’s actions as intentional theft. They clarified that its police report was unrelated to his detention. Roll & Dough said it hopes to connect with his family and, with their permission, donate part of its proceeds toward qualified legal assistance. The business also asked people not to harass Ivan, his family, or the bakery.

They believed the bakery was not responsible for Ivan’s detention. “You did nothing wrong!” one person wrote. Others expressed heartbreak over what happened to Ivan. On the other hand, several people criticized the bakery over its initial reaction to the situation. “it’s commendable that you shared his story, cleared things up and are sharing your profits, it’s the right thing to do and that’s amazing. I wanted to say, though, you only over apologise for what happened to him. Before the investigation was up, you put his profile on blast, and people doxxed a random lady who they claimed was his wife but she was completely innocent. Two people got attacked and one was directly from you putting their name and profile, possibly their livelihood, for everyone to see. Did you apologise for that? I hope you did so to them/plan to do so at least privately if you don’t do it publicly,” one person wrote.
The situation highlighted the importance of people and businesses being careful before accusing someone of stealing. This is particularly true when the circumstances have not been fully investigated. It also raised concerns about how ICE operations can affect more than just the person detained. It could also affect their family, businesses, and other people connected to the situation.
