A woman in Miami, Florida, was taking a Pilates class at a gym when she noticed another gymgoer filming the class with a camera pointed at her. After a confrontation was unsuccessful, things started to escalate. Eventually, the complaint made it all the way to the mayor.

Melyssa Renee shared the Pilates recording saga on TikTok. She is a content creator who often posts lifestyle, hiking, workout, and fashion videos online. This time around, her confrontation and follow-ups earned her immediate virality. The clip attached above, on its own, garnered 2.5 million views, 200,000 likes, and close to 3,800 comments.

The Florida woman, in her very first clip, was shown approaching the other woman at the Pilates class. Based on the exchange, it appears that Melyssa had previously attempted to make the woman move her camera or stop recording altogether. The lady refused.

“It’s girls like you that stop a lot of girls from starting fitness because you’re so self-centered in your video that you don’t care about the comfort of others,” Melyssa told her. The lady said the camera wasn’t recording her, but Melyssa argued that it didn’t matter, as she was already making someone else uncomfortable.

Escalation

In her first update, Melyssa explained that her issue was not with the idea of filming, influencers, or even the gym. Specifically, she said that her problem was with the woman, who “chose to prioritize her content over the comfort of others.”

Given how popular her videos got, Melyssa figured she could make a culture change single-handedly. First, she offered to promote any gym or studio that was willing to offer camera-free Pilates classes once or twice a week. She even reached out to multiple Miami-based studios, as shown in her most recent update.

Things, however, reached the ultimate heights when the Florida woman decided to escalate the situation even further. She reached out via email to Miami Mayor Eileen Higgins. She inquired about the possibility of introducing an ordinance establishing “reasonable privacy protections in fitness studios.” Particularly, she was referring to “filming others without their consent.”

“It is that serious,” she wrote in the post’s description.

Reactions

Melyssa’s videos and the increasing escalation sparked many responses, mostly from viewers who were tired of impromptu recording sessions at gyms or studios. One said, “The surveillance state is so exhausting. Can’t even enjoy a workout now.” Another one commented, “I don’t want phones in fitness classes.”

Some believed the Florida woman was complaining over nothing. One wrote, “You are in a public space.” Another user clapped back, “Imma go follow you around all day long while you’re in public and film you.”

Melyssa announced that she spoke with the Mayor’s Office, which told her that her concerns are being reviewed and that a statement should be issued promptly. She has also learned that many studios do offer recording-free classes, including one that answered one of her DMs.
