Sometimes people do nice things without expecting anything in return. Unfortunately, there are times when ‘being too nice’ leads to trouble, like someone overstaying their welcome. Once somebody gains access to your home without paying rent, they could legally become a tenant with rights. This means it could be difficult to evict them later on. A woman in Florida found out the hard way. As she explains her story, a conservative commenter somehow makes it about illegal immigrants.
On TikTok, user Alicia shared that she allowed someone in need to stay at her home, as she has owned it for nearly a decade and paid the mortgage in full. Now, it’s become a problem, and according to Alicia, tenants have rights. Because they got mail at her address, she’s having trouble ‘evicting’ the tenant. As Alicia states, “The civil court process takes weeks (if not months) and costs hundreds more than if they were just a tenant in an income property.”
Alicia goes on to say you should never “let altruism make you a hostage in your own home.” As she says, we’re entering “dark times economically” and may feel inclined to extend a helping hand to families in need. But she wants viewers to know your compassion could end up hurting you in the long run.
Of course, a conservative commenter on Alicia’s video couldn’t let her live it down without saying something crass about illegal immigrants. The commenter stated, “Symbolic of how the right feels about illegal immigration.”
Alicia replied to their comment with a second video. She virtually drags the commenter by throwing some facts at them about immigrants. In Alicia’s words, “Immigrants, including undocumented workers, pay tens of billions more in taxes each year than many major corporations, yet they’re treated like intruders.”
She also states the country doesn’t fulfill people’s “basic needs” and that’s why we have economic issues in our country. One commenter replied to her video with, “They always want to be a victim” and that couldn’t be more true.
Alicia has since started the process of removing her unwanted guest from her home. Sadly, it came to this, and I’m sure she’s feeling bad about the whole situation. In the end, Alicia just wanted to help somebody in need, like so many of us do in these difficult times.
