After what she believed was a decent Taco Bell interview, a Florida woman received a message from the chain’s AI bot saying she had the job, even giving her a start date. However, when she arrived at the store, she learned that there was no job waiting for her.
The confusing story was shared on TikTok by Abby, known online as yappyabbyy. She normally shares a variety of content online, mostly random lifestyle clips. The one attached above quickly became one of her biggest, garnering 1.1 million views, 154,500 likes, and more than 3,400 comments.
The Florida woman explained that she had an interview with Taco Bell. Apparently, it went well, as the chain’s AI bot, Bella, messaged Abby to tell her she was hired. Furthermore, she learned that she would start working at the restaurant on July 1 and was told to wait for a manager to reach out to her for next steps. She even shared a screenshot of the text messages she received from “Bella” in the clip’s comments.
No Job After All
So Abby filled out some information and waited. No one reached out to her for a whole week. Eventually, July 1 came by, and she was still left in the dark. So, to find out what her employment situation was, she decided to visit the Taco Bell one day after she was supposed to start working.
According to her, once she arrived at the store, the manager hid in the back of the restaurant. Then, the manager below her met Abby and told her, “So, you’re not hired. That was the AI bot.”
“Thank you so much for wasting my time. I just said, ‘Okay,’ and left,” the Florida woman added. “Taco Bell, what the hell? Why is this a possibility? Why do you have an AI bot that can hire people and not actually hire them?“
Reactions
The video sparked multiple responses, mostly from users who were as confused as Abby. One said, “That’s insane and so unethical.” Another one commented, “And thus, another reason businesses shouldn’t be using AI was born.”
Others, meanwhile, believed that Abby could take legal action against Taco Bell as she was given a start date, which is legally binding. One wrote, “Get a lawyer.” Another one added, “You have just been fired for no reason. You can sue them for wrongful termination. At the very least, you can now file for unemployment.”
With many nightmare stories involving Taco Bell and other companies shared in the comments section, it is very unlikely that Abby will ever consider working for them.
