Republican Florida gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds has recently faced criticism online due to an attack on his opponent, David Jolly, whom he described as a “far-left” politician. The unexpected outrage emerged from many commenters who believed that the Florida candidate was being unfair in his remarks.
In a recent post on X, Donalds criticized Jolly for previously saying that he “welcomes anybody from the Democratic Party” to campaign with him, implying that he would accept even socialists such as Abdul El Sayed or James Talarico. The post also included a video with images of Jolly confirming that he did, in fact, say that.
This led Donalds to write that “David Jolly and his fellow Democrats are too far-left for Florida,” implicitly urging voters to pick him instead to keep Florida safe from the left.
Donalds Criticized for Attacking Jolly
Somewhat surprisingly, Byron’s comments were generally not very well received even on a more conservative-leaning social media network such as X. In the comments, one person wrote: “Well at least he knows the Proud Boys and the KKK are not Democrats. Would love to hear you denounce them but you will take any vote. Right?”
Others also called out Donalds: “Says the man who is just another boot licking, lying Trump sycophant following the lead of the greatest liar this nation has EVER had the misfortune to have seated in the White House. And just like him, you’re promising the moon and the stars and will deliver NOTHING.”
A seemingly angry user wrote: “This [expletive] might work with the Fox News boomers but not us. You are distracting from the fact that you accomplished nothing in Congress and started a new forever war in the Middle East that is driving our cost of living through the roof.” Another added: “You are a corporate Republican grifter who wants AI data centers to further your own personal wealth.”
While most commenters were against Donalds, some people still supported him: “Jolly is a fraud!! He won’t debate, but he’ll campaign with the machine ushering in socialism. We aren’t that dumb, Dave Jolly!” Someone else agreed with Donalds’ stance on Jolly: “Today’s Democrats are too extreme for Florida.”
With less than a month remaining before the election, it’s likely that both candidates will continue to attack each other. The future of Florida seems uncertain, however, as polls show Byron Donalds in the lead, but there are expectations that this will be a close race.
