Entire generations, old and new, can cry out in joy. After an extended hiatus, everyone’s favorite green claymation friend Gumby will soon return. The show has a long history but hasn’t produced new and original content since the last official episode in 1988. That’s about to change, though. It was announced earlier today that Fox Entertainment bought the rights to Gumby and his clay universe. The loveable green guy will be revived in full force. Fox Entertainment plans to create a new animated show, live-action show, and more. This comes in the still-simmering wake of Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Studios. Hopefully, Fox will be able to do right by Gumby’s rights.
Gumby, A Long-Standing and Flexible Series
Sometimes it’s hard to believe that Gumby started almost 70 years ago. Originally produced by Art Clokey, it was first brought to life as a three-minute-long short in 1953. After some time, Clokey ended up running The Gumby Show on NBC. Gumby’s popularity even brought interest from the Lutheran church, which helped him create Davey and Goliath. The original show stopped after the 70s, but popularity brought it back more than once. It returned in the 80s for even more Gumby-filled adventures. The last official episode was created by Clokey in 1988, though many spin-offs have come and gone since then.
Some Big New Plans From the New Owners
Fox Entertainment has been very candid about their plans with Gumby since they bought his rights earlier today. The franchise was acquired from the estate of Joseph Clokey, son of the creator Art. Fox plans to reimagine Gumby for new generations to come. Their streaming platform Tubi will now be streaming classic Gumby episodes. Fox also has plans to create new products and merchandise, including a divisive NFT. Fox Entertainment isn’t slowing down after all the merger nonsense, it seems. Hopefully, they can mold Gumby’s revival into something that fans of all ages can still love.
