Winter is nearly upon us, and HBO is slowly releasing details, footage, and hints about the upcoming season of Game of Thrones. This week, a new trailer was released alongside some character-specific posters that offer even more hints about what to expect from the upcoming seventh season. Let’s start with the new trailer, which uses the amazing music from the beginning of season six’s finale:
Judging from the trailer, here’s what can we expect from the upcoming season:
- The major powers (Cersei, Dany, Jon) are going to come into some serious conflict this season. There are a ton of action scenes in the trailer, and they look to be taking place across a wide variety of locations. The shortened seventh and eighth seasons (seven episodes and six episodes, respectively) mean that the budget for each episode will be much bigger, so expect some serious fireworks this season.
- Bran finally gets a wheelchair! Thank God Meera won’t have to drag him through the snow all season. Also, Bran will probably fill in more of the history of the White Walkers (and hopefully discover an effective way to stop them).
- The political machinations in the North are going to continue. We get voiceovers from Littlefinger, Jon, and Sansa in the trailer, and it’s hard to imagine we’ll get through this Game of Thrones season without those tensions boiling over.
- We get to see Jaime back in combat, which he is not too great at since being relieved of his hand.
- True battle scenes with giant dragons!
- Oh, and don’t let this screengrab pass you by:
To continue the hype, check out the gallery of character posters HBO released below. Riffing on the classic Game of Thrones warning “Winter is coming,” we now have the faces of Tyrion, Sansa, Brienne, and the like informing us that “Winter is here.” Look closely in each character’s eye to see the show’s big bad, the Night King, reflected.
