The Game of Thrones prequel has begun filming. HBO has announced the new series will take place thousands of years before the events that take place in A Song of Ice and Fire.
Say what you will about season eight of GoT, there is no denying it was a ratings bonanza. However, fans were mixed at how the story played out. Critics, too, were vocal about its unevenness. Regardless, this isn’t stopping HBO from exploiting the hot property for another go around.
The new show will follow the founding families of Westeros. The story will dive deeper into how the world we have come to love was built. The Game of Thrones prequel will also touch upon the true nature of the White Walkers and where they came from.
Directed by S. J. Clarkson and with Show Runner Jane Goldman, the prequel GoTseries boasts an impressive cast. Naomi Watts stars as the series’ lead, along with Denise Gough, Josh Whitehouse, Miranda Richardson, Jamie Campbell, and Naomi Achie. Look for Achie’s star to rise in the near future, as she is co-starring in The Last Jedi this December.
Little else is known about the Game of Thrones prequel at this time. With a healthy amount of fan and critic backlash for the ending of the beloved original series, HBO might want to consider waiting and building up anticipation. GoT doesn’t come cheap, and HBO will want to ensure they get a properly made and well-liked series for their money.
Rumors have the show premiering as early as 2020. With the third season of Westworld also bowing in the spring of 2020, we could potentially see the GoTprequel wait another year until 2021. This kind of project should never be rushed.
Game of Thrones is a massively popular book and television franchise. After eight successful seasons, fans aren’t just going to up and walk away. Viewers want more Thrones and they are willing to wait for it. HBO should learn from their mistakes on the last season of GoT and take their time in developing the prequel. Only time will tell if the cable network has another hit on their hands, or if it will all go up in flames.
