The internet can’t decide whether to laugh or cry after the Trump administration waded into the “end of the console wars” in the weirdest and sloppiest way possible, by posting an AI-generated image of Donald Trump as Halo’s Master Chief, complete with a 40-star U.S. flag (who knows what happened to the 10 other states). Additionally, Homeland Security joined the fray by turning Halo into an ICE advertisement.
This bizarre chain of events began when Microsoft announced that Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of the 2001 classic, would be coming to PlayStation for the first time, marking the end of Halo being an Xbox exclusive. Afterward, GameStop declared the “20-year console wars” officially over because of this new development. Then, for reasons no one fully understands, the official White House account decided to join (or ruin) the fun.
Their post featured Trump in Master Chief’s green armor, saluting in front of the White House while holding an energy sword. The image was clearly AI-generated and clearly wrong. Several eagle-eyed people online immediately noticed the missing 10 stars on the flag, even sparking conspiracy theories that the administration’s bot had accidentally deleted parts of the U.S.
Things only got stranger when the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) joined in, tweeting a Halo image alongside the slogan “Finishing this fight,” using it to promote ICE recruitment, implying that undocumented immigrants are the Flood from Halo. The AI image has since gone viral, racking up millions of views and reminding everyone that maybe, just maybe, not every meme needs executive approval.
Still, the combination of military sci-fi, meme humor, and immigration enforcement was, predictably, not well received by many people. Gamers, notably Halo fans, piled on, mocking the government’s attempt to court the gaming crowd with what some consider weaponized memes.
Halo fans were quick to correct the Trump admin
Apart from forgetting about 10 US states in their very own flag, White House and Homeland Security quickly received some corrective replies from gamers and people online. There’s also the fact that Master Chief has generally been one of the most beloved heroes in the gaming community, and comparing him to Trump was indeed a far reach in the Halo franchise.
With that in mind, one of the most highly voted replies was from Anituber Chiramune, who tweeted, “Master chief would never [expletive] be associated with MAGA lmao. You are the covenant. Evil, theocratic fascists,” in response to the White House likening the Master Chief to Trump.
Another critic, specifically YouTuber Jacks Films, pointed out just how easy it was to spot the AI filter and mistakes, while also condemning Homeland Security and its head-scratching recruitment effort for ICE, “Love the AI piss filter, thank you for making this shit super easy to spot (also count the stars, only 40 are shown). Also fuck Trump and fuck ICE.”
Granted, it’s not the first time the DHS or ICE has used a pop culture reference to recruit for ICE. In the recent past, they also remade the original Pokémon opening song into an equally absurd and crude ICE recruitment video, associating the “Gotta Catch ‘Em All” phrase with ICE’s activities. At the time, it was also condemned for being dehumanizing fascist propaganda.
