Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a little more than just a remake of the classic 1997 JRPG, it’s a total overhaul and expansion with a different combat system and so much story content added that what was once a single game has now been split into three. It may seem like a lot, but it’s honestly not the only game out there that deserves that treatment. There are a few other games in need of remakes that could greatly benefit from story expansions that push these remakes into more than just a single game.
Final Fantasy 9
Final Fantasy 7 may have had three discs back in its PS1 days, sort of representative of the three different games its remake is getting now, but Final Fantasy 9 had a whopping four discs. There are a lot of characters and a complex backdrop running through the fantasy world of Final Fantasy 9, which could greatly benefit from further expansion and exploration. Considering the producer of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Yoshinori Kitase, has said that a Final Fantasy 6 remake may be closer to next in line and will likely take even longer than the three FF7 Remake games, though, fans may not want to get their hopes up for an FF9 remake of this scale anytime soon.
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
The relative obscurity of the Fire Emblem series in the West up until the breakout success of Fire Emblem Awakening has meant far too many classic games in the series have gone without official English releases. While a port of one of the most-sought titles, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, wouldn’t be unwelcome by any means, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia has left a lot of players thinking a remake for other older titles may be the best way to go. There’s a lot of lore and Game of Thrones-esque political maneuvering going on between Genealogy of the Holy War and its sequel Thracia 776, so a remake that expands on all that and results in potentially even more entries to the series would likely be very popular with fans.
Resident Evil 0
The lore of Resident Evil is almost as crazy as organisms infected with the C-Virus… or G-Virus… or T-Virus… and the fact that there are a lot of alphabet-themed virus strains is just the tip of the iceberg. Resident Evil 0 attempts to go back to the beginning, leading up to the events of Resident Evil 1, to give some more context behind the madness that ensues throughout the rest of the series. Considering Capcom has now done remakes of two through four, going back to the beginning to not only remake but expand a lot of what’s covered in Resident Evil 0 could be a great way to further flesh out the running story of the whole series.
Persona 1
The Persona community is all giddy about remakes right now, whether that be the recent massive success of Persona 3 Reload or the exciting leak that states remakes of Persona 2 and Persona 4 are both on the table over at Atlus. That leaves only the original game that began the whole shebang left out in the cold and neglected, but it might also be the title that would benefit the most from an expansive remake.
Persona 1 frequently rates the lowest on most lists of pitting games in the series against each other due to its antiquated mechanics and JRPG battle system that doesn’t quite fit with the rest of the series. Making this game more up-to-date with current Persona battle mechanics would be amazing, and giving it the social links and further fleshed-out characters that entails would do nothing but enhance this legacy title.
Final Fantasy Type-0
Final Fantasy Type-0 has 14 playable protagonists. If it sounds like that’s too many characters to fully flesh out their stories in a single game, that’s because it is. The title is sort of begging for a remake that expands the story and gives more attention to each character, though, because they do immediately draw the player in with their unique weapons, combat styles, and personalities. It would be cool to see more attention put into the various dynamics between students and some more character arcs outside of just Machina and Rem.
