Konami showcased a thirty minutes of gameplay footage from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain at Gamescom this week. The footage, instead of focusing on the storyline of the hotly anticipated game, focused on a feature called Mother Base. Mother Base is where Snake goes between his missions in MGSV. The base is customizable and has various platforms that can be added and multiple uses.
In terms of platforms, possible upgrades are R&D, Combat Unit, and Support Platforms. R&D is used to research new weapons and equipment like rocket launchers and stealth camo. The combat unit platform let’s you choose from different recruited soldiers to play missions as. Some missions require certain skillsets that Snake may not have, so it’s always handy to have a trained botanist around. The support platform allows players to use airstrikes and covering fire when completing missions.
MGSV also uses Mother Base as part of an entirely different online experience from MGO. When a players Mother Base has grown large enough, players can construct FOB’s, or Forward Operating Bases. These bases are used to mine resources from all over the globe to help in the online and offline portions of MGSV. Other online players can attack your FOB to steal resources and manpower. It’s up to you to defend your turf using upgraded security and 1v1 battles. FOBs can be attacked at anytime, even when a player is on missions. The iDroid device, first showcased in Ground Zeroes, is able to monitor and control your FOBs from the field.
Other features shown in the footage include dynamic weather at the bases, a hygiene system, and an entire system that controls how your Diamond Dog recruits interact. There’s even a few nods to P.T. in the footage if you look closely. Overall, Mother Base is promised to be a massive part of the game and Konami says there’s still plenty to find out about it. Honestly, it seems like an entire game in itself, and that should be great news for those anticipating MGSV.
