Most apartments are already subject to a host of smells from occupant diversity, but the stench of trash is obviously unacceptable, though a complex in Texas suffers from this very issue. A tenant going by Key-Balance-8587 on Reddit has shared a horror story on r/legal about how the apartment management reportedly won’t pay for their trash pickup, resulting in a massive buildup of garbage. Needless to say, Key-Balance-8587 is very concerned.
“This is a serious health hazard as this much trash is bound to attract raccoons, rats, etc. not to mention Texas summer heat that will bake everything and create a serious stench,” Key-Balance-8587 wrote. Among the hundreds tuning into their apartment’s trash buildup predicament, dozens expressed their agreement on how serious this was by offering suggestions and advice.
Reddit Strongly Recommends Getting City Authorities Involved
“Try the health department!” exclaimed a Redditor. “Rat Invasion is just ramping up,” remarked another, as rats infesting the growing mountain of trash is anything but a joke. Others chimed in, recommending OP to call the fire marshal, health department, and code enforcement as soon as possible. As one user aptly put it, “the city is your friend here” in this situation.
For context, Key-Balance-8587 claims they’ve been living in the Texas apartment complex for almost 3 years but have never seen such a concerning buildup of trash before. They added that the likely reason no one is paying for trash pickup is that the management had undergone a change. “I found out from a maintenance worker that everyone quit except for him and the property manager,” they wrote.
With such a drastic change, the current manager has allegedly given up the responsibility to pay for the trash to be picked up. Despite this, the tenants are still paying rent in full as usual. That said, it’s no wonder that Key-Balance-8587 is seeking advice on how to take legal action against the management.
Fortunately, they listened to the suggestions from their post’s comments. “I’ve submitted a report to code compliance and called the fire marshall and health department,” OP wrote in an update, which will hopefully get the ball rolling on getting things resolved.
