Gearbox Software, the developer and publisher (through its Gearbox Publishing arm) best known for the Borderlands game franchise, has announced at Pax East that it is developing a new game in the critically acclaimed Tales from the Borderlands series. Best of all, the newest choice-based narrative adventure is set to debut later this year with a proper announcement this Summer!
Seeing as they’ll be properly announcing the game in the coming months, Gearbox wasn’t one to divulge too much about the new Tales from the Borderlands game. Though with that being said, they had a few tidbits of information to share. Firstly, unlike the original game, this new adventure will be developed in-house without the help of Telltale Games. Whether this is due to creative differences, the latter studio’s previous shutdown back in 2018, or other reasons is unknown. It was implied during the event though that the game would take on a similar format to the previous entry. The other note worth mentioning is with regards to its setting, as Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford mentioned on stage that this would be an all-new adventure with original characters not seen in the series yet (presumably). Yes, I too share in the tears for the loss of our Rhys and Fiona adventures.
Beyond a new Tales from the Borderlands game, Gearbox Software shared a handful of new projects it’s partnering with through its publishing arm. These include a new partnership with Heart Machine for Hyper Light Breaker, which is set to launch in Steam Early Access in Q2 2023. There was also a partnership with “roguelight” platformer Eyes in the Dark, co-op looter shooter Relic Hunters Legend, a Homeworld 3 Collector’s Edition, and much more! Head over to the official Gearbox Twitter account and the Steam pages linked for all the news on those.
For now, what are your thoughts on a new game in the Tales from the Borderlands series by Gearbox? What planet do you hope to see it set on? Let me know!
