Gears of War 4 is only days away from full release. In a promotion live stream, Universal Pictures revealed that the video game series would also be getting a feature-length film. The franchise is packed with plenty of exciting moments and an extensive world of lore. Any movie made for Gears of War has a lot to draw from.
The Coalition, the developer of the latest video game installment for the series, announced the news during the live stream. The franchise has made comics and novel adaptations before. Yet, a film project has never successfully released. There have been a number of rumors in the past about Gears of War movies. In 2007, New Line Cinema announced it would be heading a film. However, nothing has ever come to fruition. Yet with such a big announcement made by the developer, it seems that fans will finally be getting a film centering on Marcus Fenix’s world.
Rod Fergusson, studio head of The Coalition, said that the Gears of War movie would be trying to take a different direction from that of most video game films.
“I think you have to let the movies be the movies. They’re two different mediums, and two different audiences in some cases, and I think some video game movies in the past have failed because they tried to make a movie for gamers. If you have this great IP with a deep backstory and lots of lore that you can make interesting stories out of, its great. But if you just go after the gaming audience then it isn’t going to be a successful movie.”
The original Gears of War follows Marcus Fenix and his friends as they fight off a race of aliens called the Locust. Gears of War 4 focuses on Fenix’s son. It is still unclear what story line the developing film will choose to tell.
