Actress Sonya Eddy, known for her work on General Hospital, has died at the age of 55. Eddy’s friend, actress Octavia Spencer, announced her death in an Instagram post, saying, “The world lost another creative angel.” According to TMZ, Eddy began her run on the ABC soap opera in 2006 and appeared in 543 episodes as Epiphany Johnson, a beloved no-nonsense nurse and mother to Stan, a character killed off by the mob in 2007. She also portrayed Epiphany on the SOAPnet channel’s spin-0ff General Hospital: Night Shift. Eddy’s cause of death is unknown. Her death occurs just five weeks after the death of another soap opera star, John Aniston of Days of Our Lives.

Sonya Eddy was born in Concord, California. She earned a B.A. in theatre and dance from the University of California, Davis, in 1992 and was also a licensed vocational nurse. She began her acting career in the West Coast premiere of Zora, Is My Name, written by actress Ruby Dee. She played several roles in Zora and went on to have roles in The Crucible, Comedy of Errors, Pericles, and Into the Woods. She also won an Arty Award for playing Bloody Mary in a production of South Pacific.
Along with General Hospital, Eddy’s TV credits included recurring roles on ER, Joan of Arcadia, Seinfeld, The Drew Carrey Show, and more. She was a regular on Martin Short’s Primetime Glick, and she made guest appearances on Malcolm in the Middle, Reba, Everybody Hates Chris, Glee, and more. Film roles included parts in Coach Carter, Bad News Bears, Barbershop, Daddy Daycare, Matchstick Men, and Year of the Dog.
