When trading with members of the Fishing Association in Genshin Impact, one fish that will often come up during exchanges is the Medaka. The Medaka has multiple variants across Teyvat, such as the Crystalfish, Dawncatcher, or Sweet-Flower Medaka. However, the one you’ll be needing the most to acquire Bait Formulas or exclusive weapons like The Catch will be the common, orange-pinkish species. This fish is so common, in fact, that you can encounter it at fishing spots in Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma, and Sumeru.
Best Medaka Fishing Spots in Genshin Impact
When we say “best,” we are not referring to spots where Medaka consistently appears plentifully, as the spawn rates are often randomized. Instead, we will go over the general Medaka locations in Genshin Impact that are relatively accessible. To be sure, we’ve visited each of the fishing spots to confirm that Medaka do appear.
Best Medaka Locations in Mondstadt
The first region of your journey, Mondstadt, has five fishing locations where you can find Medaka in Genshin Impact:
- The pond on the northern side of Stormterror’s Lair
- The lake on the southern side of Stormterror’s Lair
- The southern end of the elevated channel of water in Stormbearer Mountains
- The river behind the giant oak tree at Windrise
- The pond between the Entombed City – Outskirts and Starglow Cavern in Dragonspine
Of these five fishing holes, we found the location at Windrise to be the least reliable with its Medaka spawns. Not one Medaka appeared after we visited the river three times, but your experience might differ.
Best Medaka Locations in Liyue
Like Mondstadt, Rex Lapis’ region of Liyue has five Medaka locations as well:
- The water near the smallest land mass of the archipelago in the northwest of the Bishui Plain
- The water beside the small tri-archipelago southeast of the location above
- The sizeable pond atop Mt. Aocang
- The river in the gorge east of Mt. Hulao
- The water near the collapsed bridge of the central Tianqiu Valley ruins
You might see some sources online mention a fishing hole west of Wangshu Inn has Medaka. However, we’ve checked this spot, verifying that the fish there is Sweet-Flower Medaka, not the common one we’re looking for. Additionally, there’s a fishing spot in the Underground Waterway of The Chasm. However, we’ve left that one out due to the nightmare of navigating that area, excluding it from the “best” locations.
Best Medaka Locations in Inazuma
The Electro region of Inazuma has four notable spots where you might find Medaka in Genshin Impact:
- The water down below, southeast of the northern Waypoint on Watatsumi Island
- The sea next to a rock beside the Waverider Waypoint near the Suigetsu Pool island
- The eastern shore opposite Koseki Village of Seirai Island
- The water north of the shipwreck on Nazuchi Beach
Like the river near Windrise, we personally do not recommend the fishing spot on Nazuchi Beach. We haven’t seen a Medaka spawn after visiting the location four times, but perhaps this is just odd RNG. Also, we should mention that there are two possible fishing spots on Tsurumi Island. However, due to the area being inaccessible because of the pesky, quest-exclusive mist, we’ve left it out.
Best Medaka Locations in Sumeru
Last but not least, we found Medaka at the following locations in Sumeru:
- The pond north of the large cascade on the southern side of Vanarana
- The river directly next to the Waypoint of Vimara Village
- The canyon river northwest of the Aaru Village Waypoint
- The oasis lake west of the Dendro Hypostasis
How To Catch Medaka in Genshin Impact
To catch Medaka, you’ll need Fruit Paste Bait, which is the first fishing lure you receive during “Exploding Population.” It’s crafted using a Sunsettia fruit and Wheat, both of which are abundant in Mondstadt.
