Georgia Farmers Feel the Squeeze as Record Diesel Prices Could Raise Costs From Farm to Store: ‘Every Bit of It Is Costing More and More’

Georgia farmers are feeling the squeeze as record-high diesel prices pile even more pressure onto an industry already operating on razor-thin margins. With fuel needed to plant, harvest, transport, and ultimately get produce onto store shelves, growers are watching one of their most important expenses climb dramatically — and those rising costs could eventually be felt well beyond the farm, affecting families and communities across the state.

According to WABE, diesel prices in Georgia climbed above $6.35 per gallon over the weekend, reaching a record high. Chris Butts, executive director of the Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, says fuel expenses for growers have nearly doubled over the past year, while fertilizer costs have also increased, putting even more strain on farms already struggling to turn a profit.

Diesel is essential at almost every stage of farming, powering everything from tractors and irrigation systems to the trucks that eventually carry crops to market. That means even relatively small increases can quickly add up for growers, let alone the record prices Georgia is now experiencing. As Butts put it, “Every bit of it is costing more and more. Record amounts for the grower to get that produce to market.”

Unfortunately, the concern doesn’t stop at the farm gate, either. When growers are forced to spend more on fuel to produce and transport their crops, those additional expenses can work their way through the supply chain. For Georgia families already keeping a close eye on grocery bills, that raises concerns that record diesel prices could eventually make locally grown produce and other everyday essentials more expensive.

Worryingly, the surge in diesel prices comes amid wider turmoil in global energy markets, with the ongoing conflict involving Iran contributing to higher crude oil prices and concerns over fuel supplies. Those pressures have sent diesel prices soaring across the country, but in an agriculture-heavy state like Georgia, the consequences can be particularly difficult for farmers who have little choice but to keep their machinery and trucks running.

Georgia Locals React to Record Diesel Prices

The situation has also struck a nerve with Georgia residents. Over on Reddit, many locals were concerned that the pain could eventually spread far beyond the people working the land. One commenter warned, “Farmers are already working with tight margins. Diesel getting this expensive is going to hurt way beyond just the farm.” Another urged people not to lose sight of the wider consequences, writing, “Hey, many farmers voted him. We are all in this together. Some of my family voted for him. I like eating. This situation is going to get rough.”

Others were considerably less sympathetic, particularly when discussing the political backdrop. One person quipped, “It’s like slugs voting for salt,” while another simply wrote, “Have the day you voted for.” Not everyone agreed with placing the blame on politicians, however. One commenter argued, “This has nothing to do with red or blue. Oil prices were record high under Biden and prices weren’t this bad. It’s the companies not politicians this time.”

While opinions differed sharply over who bears responsibility, there was considerably more agreement that rising diesel costs could become a problem extending well beyond Georgia’s farms.

For Georgia farmers, though, the immediate reality is much simpler: crops still need to be grown and food still needs to reach the people who rely on it, regardless of what diesel costs at the pump. With many growers already working on tight margins, record fuel prices leave increasingly little room to absorb the extra expense. And if those costs continue climbing, farmers may not be the only ones feeling the squeeze — families could eventually notice it at the grocery store, too.
