Wisconsin dairy farmer and online creator Abby Swan has found herself at the centre of a brutal internet backlash after saying she is working 80-hour weeks, struggling to find employees and relying largely on high school workers to keep her farm running.
Swan said she recently called Wisconsin’s mental health crisis line because the pressure had become overwhelming, stressing that she needed someone to talk to.
“Life on the farm is really, really stressful,” she said, explaining that cows still have to be milked twice a day regardless of staffing problems.
Swan said she kept a help-wanted sign outside for two months and that much of the help she gets now comes from former employees who already have full-time jobs.
But once the video reached Reddit, sympathy was in desperately short supply. Critics focused heavily on Swan’s previous support for Donald Trump and argued that her labor problems represented the consequences of political choices they associated with tougher immigration enforcement. Reporting on the controversy has similarly identified Swan as a Trump supporter and documented online accusations that she backed mass deportations before struggling to find farm workers.
‘You Voted for Exactly This’
One Reddit commenter put the anger in six blunt words: “Lady. You voted for exactly this.”
Others zeroed in on another part of Swan’s previous comments, in which she described rejecting a prospective worker seeking $20 an hour and housing. One highly upvoted response argued: “So you can find workers, you just don’t want to pay them.”
That distinction turned Swan’s staffing crisis into something much bigger online. Critics were no longer debating whether farms are under pressure. They were accusing her of wanting labor on terms workers simply will not accept.
Swan’s situation is genuinely difficult. Reporting says she milks roughly 300 cows while facing higher costs and a labor shortage, with the economics of dairy farming already under serious strain.
But the political fury surrounding her story comes from what critics see as a contradiction: supporting a political movement promising aggressive deportation policies while operating in an agricultural economy where immigrant labor plays a significant role.
Reddit did not treat that contradiction gently… at all. Swan’s crisis may have begun with cows, wages, and exhausting working hours, but once her voting record entered the conversation, the story became something else entirely.
For her critics, this is not simply a Wisconsin farmer asking where all the workers went. It is a political receipt arriving at the worst possible time.
