Earlier today, it was announced that Rila Fukushima will be joining the cast of the live-action Ghost in the Shell film.
The Hollywood Reporter provided the information, and also stated that Fukushima’s role in the project has not yet been revealed. Scarlet Johansson has already been set as the lead for the movie, the Major Kusanagi. What with all of the whitewashing allegations Hollywood has been facing recently, it is nice to see that Fukushima is getting more roles. Hopefully, it will be a more prominent character in the plot.
Last month, DreamWorks shared an image of Johansson. They also provided a brief synopsis for the live-action film. The Ghost in the Shell upcoming movie is based on the large sci-fi franchise and follows the human-cyborg Major as she leads elite task force Section 9. Section 9 is devoted to stopping some of the most dangerous criminals, and they will be facing off specifically against an enemy who wants to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s cyber technology. The film will be directed by Rupert Sanders (who was in charge of Snow White and the Huntsman) with a script written by Jonathan Herman and Jamie Moss.
Fukushima is most well-known for her role in 2013’s The Wolverine, where she played Yukio, a Japanese ninja/mutant. She has also played the character Katana in The CW’s Arrow and even briefly appeared in HBO’s Game of Thrones as a Red Priestess. Fukushima’s roles tend toward action, and often superhero status, so it will be interesting to see what sort of character she plays in Ghost in the Shell.
Who do you think Rila Fukushima will be cast as? What do you think of her addition to Ghost in the Shell? Let us know in the comments!
