One of PlayStation’s flagship games is heading for the streaming TV market. We have known for some time that PlayStation Productions has been aiming to have a God of War TV series, but now we know it will find a home at Amazon Prime Video after being developed since March of this year. It has some heavy hitters, as Rafe Judkins (Wheel of Time) will act as the showrunner. The creators of The Expanse, Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, will write and executive produce with Judkins. Cory Barlog, Yumi Yang, Roy Lee, Asad Qizilbash, and Carter Swan
The games by Sony Santa Monica have been largely based in Greece, following the adventures with Kratos. The 2018 sequel/soft reboot and its 2022 sequel, Ragnarok, found him settled in the world of Norse mythology. The God of War TV series will be based on the later Norse games. After so much death and wrongdoing, Kratos settles in Midgard to start a family and find peace, although he does not find much as he and his son, Atreus, spread his wife’s ashes at the highest peak in all the realms. This is the plot of the 2018 game, which the series will adapt from.
God of War TV series adapts 2018 game on Amazon Prime Video
The last two games have made crushing wins at The Game Awards, on top of selling like hotcakes. The 2018 entry won Game of the Year, among other awards. Ragnarok recently won Best Narrative, Best Performance with Christopher Judge, Best Audio Design, and Innovation in Accessibility.
No casting or release window has been set for the God of War TV series. Judge has thrown his name into the mix to reprise his role as Kratos for the live-action adaption. As developments go further, we will see what direction Amazon takes the adaption.
Video game adaptions have Hollywood going wild. In January, we will have HBO’s The Last of Us. Others that are in the making are Netflix’s Horizon, Amazon’s Fallout, Super Mario Bros., Mortal Kombat 2, and Twisted Metal.
