In 2014, HB Studios joined the fray of golf video games with The Golf Club. While the Nova Scotian developer cut its teeth on rugby and cricket games the title did garner a loyal following. Part of the appeal of The Golf Club was its course creator toolkit that allowed gamers to generate wildly insane courses or duplicates of their hometown favorites. In fact, the course creator was so robust that Greg “The Shark” Norman used it in his course design business.
HB Studios is now hoping to build upon their first outing on the links with The Golf Club 2, due this spring on Xbox One, PS4, and PC. In the new announcement trailer Anthony Kyne, HB Studios Producer, talks course design immediately calling it, “the Minecraft of Golf in a way”. It is hard to argue with that statement with over 150,000 gold courses created in the first title.
New to the game is improved societies where gamers can recruit a group to compete towards a common goal. The winnings and accolades turn into a swanky and exclusive clubhouse for the group and access to exclusive tournaments. The better you do the more likely you will be hobnobbing in palatial settings amongst the elite of the sport.
Career mode has also now been included in The Golf Club 2. This entails, “a series of tournaments players must advance through in Career Mode to move up in status. As you progress through your season, your competition grows with you, pushing you to improve your game. Career earnings from each event and season give you the freedom to purchase clothing and accessories for your golfer, along with membership dues to Societies.”
Online tournaments are also available in The Golf Club 2 allowing golfers and societies to face off against each other with money and bragging rights on the line. The developers have focused on the game’s community to provide challenge and inspiration to keep gamers wanting to play one more round. An exact release date has yet to be announced.
