There seems to be hope for golf player Rory McIlroy‘s marriage to Erica Stoll. Their union was hanging by a thread, ready to be snipped, when the Irish golfer shocking filed for divorce in May after seven years of marriage. However, in a dramatic u-turn, McIlroy has filed to dismiss the divorce, telling the court he is ready to work things out with his wife.
Just a day before the one-month anniversary of the divorce filing, McIlroy rescinded his request to end his marriage. On Tuesday, the golfer’s attorney filed a notice of voluntary dismissal, closing the divorce case. Shortly after the filing, the 35-year-old explained the reason behind the reversal. “There have been rumors about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumor is a fool’s game,” he said in a statement to The Guardian. The former world number one then declared his re-commitment to Stoll, saying:
“Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

McIlroy seemed to have hinted at his marital reconciliation before the filing. Earlier in the day, he was seen in great spirits during a press conference at Pinehurst Resort, where the 2024 U.S. Open Golf Championship will take place.
Rory McIlroy Filed For Divorce Before a Major Championship
McIlroy tried to pull the plug on his marriage on May 13, citing that it was irretrievably broken. Although the four-time major champion didn’t give a reason, his attorney confirmed that he wouldn’t publicly comment on the divorce. Why? Because McIlroy was adamant about making “this difficult time as respectful and amicable as possible.” The news of a divorce was even more shocking, given that it surfaced just hours before the Northern Ireland native set to play at the PGA Championship in Kentucky.
McIlroy and Stoll’s relationship dates back to 2012 when they met at the Ryder Cup event. However, it wasn’t until two years later that they became romantically involved. They walked down the aisle in 2017 in a lavish ceremony at Ashford Castle in County Mayo, Ireland. McIlroy and Stoll are parents to a 3-year-old daughter, Poppy.
