One grandma in Florida realized you can use technology as a way of bonding with your grandkids and have fun, too. On social media, she’s known as Grandmallamaa. When she realized her granddaughter was more interested in watching online sensation Ms. Rachel, she got an idea. Instead of languishing over it, she thought it best to put herself on even ground with the YouTube star. And her granddaughter, Heavenly, loves it!

The animated and high-spirited grandmother clearly loves spending time with her granddaughter. She turned into a one-woman production crew just for her. According to a post made by Heavenly’s mother, “My mom got jealous of Ms. Rachel and made her own video for her grandkid!” The now-viral grandmother filmed a video in Ms. Rachel’s popular style for Heavenly as a way to connect with her and show her how much she loves her.

In her first video, she sings to Heavenly, all the while being edited into a school bus. “Hi Heavenly. Let’s go for an ABC,” she sings. TikTok fell in love with the video instantly, realizing just the lengths that a grandmother would go to for her grandchild and saying that it is truly the sweetest thing ever. Heavenly’s mother, Tresure, stated, “I thought it was nothing but hilarious when she sent me the video and told me she planned on making more.”

And these plans turned into reality. Grandmallamaa now has several videos available to watch and continues to make more content. In fact, she’s expanded to include her audience, and not just Heavenly. Her own TikTok states, “Join my enchanted adventures! I can be your grandma too.” The energy and heart she brings to these videos show that she is truly dedicated to the craft. More importantly, it created a special way of bonding with her granddaughter, who lives states away.

Research has shown that the bond between a child and their grandmother can be incredibly powerful emotionally, which is why I love that these two found such a precious way to spend time together. Sure, technology can get in the way of one-on-one relationships. However, it can be just as useful for connecting with others. And in this case, Grandmallamaa found a creative way to maintain her relationship with her family.
