The apparent release date of Grand Theft Auto VI has been leaked by an Austrian video game retailer, Gameware.at. Apparent because, well, the dates seem somewhat hard to swallow. In now-deleted adverts, Gameware is stating a release in ā€œ2020ā€ for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.Ā

Considering GTA VIĀ has not been publicly announced by Rockstar, a release in 2020 seems unlikely. GTA V was announced in 2011. Following several delays, GTA V was released in September of 2013 for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

The listings on Gameware also include a ā€œD1ā€ edition, likely referring to a Day One edition – what that edition is to include remains unclear. A 2020 release for PC would also mark the first time a Rockstar game has launched for the PC at the same time as consoles. PC players waited two years for GTA V and one year for Red Dead Redemption 2.

Gameware had dropped the ball previously, announcing Devil May Cry 5 and Need For Speed Heat before they were officially announced, fuelling fan belief that this could be a legitimate date and not merely an over-eager employee with their wires crossed.

Compounding beliefs this date could be correct are recent job ads by Rockstar, including a video editor who ā€œmust be able to communicate the emotional content and excitement of a game within a 60-second format.ā€

Several other roles focus on the next generation of technology, with adverts for PS5 and Xbox Series X developers to push the envelope of graphical capability and gameplay. With this in mind, the 2020 release is likely an error. If Rockstar is aiming to push the boundaries with GTA VIĀ designing and building for PS4 and Xbox One would drastically limit that ambition.

Spend most of my gaming life watching my son on Super Mario Odyssey. Or watching Super Mario Odyssey play throughs on Youtube. Love to hate Destiny 2. Hopes for a Dredd sequel someday. Desperately missing The Leftovers.
