The MCU has been one of the most talked about topics coming out of San Diego Comic-Con despite not having anything to showcase at the event. This is due to some controversial tweets from Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn that resurfaced on Twitter. Not long thereafter, Disney decided to cut all ties with Gunn.
There appear to be two trains of thought to this firing. One believes that Gunn’s tweets were repulsive and that he deserved to be fired for his actions. The other side states that the tweets were ill-advised “jokes” but the director doesn’t deserve to be punished for things said over a decade ago.
The Guardians of the Galaxy cast have just issued a statement on Gunn’s firing. You can see it down below:
It is actually surprising to see the cast come out in support of their former director seeing as they are essentially disagreeing with their bosses at Disney. Whether or not this leads to Gunn being rehired for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 remains to be seen (although it is still highly unlikely).
Gunn hasn’t been the only celebrity to be targeted by people on social media. Co-creator of the hit Adult Swim series Rick and Morty Dan Harmon recently deleted his Twitter account after a controversial skit appeared online. This skit was a Dexter parody called Daryl. Adult Swim has said that Harmon will not be fired from his duties on the network.
Comedians Anthony Jeselnik, Michael Ian Black, Sarah Silverman, and Patton Oswalt have also been targeted as well by the same group that has taken credit for the firing of James Gunn.
