Warning: Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #1 and Grootfall event.
Guardians of the Galaxy #1 was finally released this week, and it brought some answers to the biggest question in the galaxy; What is Grootfall? The mysterious event has been teased in the months leading up to Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, and Kev Walker’s Guardians relaunch. It turns out the mysterious entity that shattered the Guardians and sent them fleeing to the far reaches of the Universe was none other than Groot…sort of.
A New Era of Guardians of the Galaxy
The inaugural issue of the new series finds the leftover Guardians on a desolate planet. Star-Lord, Mantis, Gamora, Nebula, and Drax are currently within the newly opened portion of the universe found in Dan Slott and Marco Checchetto’s “Reckoning War.” Why are the Guardians on this planet? It seems they are trying to save it from Grootfall.
While the mystery around Grootfall follows most of the issue, readers finally get an answer to what this scary event is. When one of the planet’s residents asks what is going on and what happened to the heroes, Mantis simply points up. There, we see a monstrous version of Groot slowly eclipsing over the planet.
So, it looks like Groot is not having a good day in this new Guardians of the Galaxy era. Luckily, the team can get some of the planet’s citizens to safety. However, those left behind are absorbed into the terrifying Groot entity. I am no expert on terrifying tree-space beings, but it sure looks like Groot get is getting bigger, especially after absorbing most of the planet and its people. This new era sure is something!
What’s Next?
Of course, we still don’t know why or how Groot became this Grootfall entity. Plus, Rocket Raccoon was noticeably absent from the issue. Hopefully, we will get more answers sooner rather than later. Until then, I guess we should buckle up and enjoy the ride!
