While Heart of Thorns doesn’t change much of its core gameplay, the expansion improves the end-game with additions to the mastery system, elite specialization for existing classes that allow characters to access previously unusable weapons and skills; a new area of Tyria to explore (Maguuma) and various improvements for PvE and PVP modes.
The release of Heart of Thorns comes after developer ArenaNet announced that the core game would be free to play. However the expansion will be available for purchase at $49.99, which comes with the core game. ArenaNet offers additional bundles for anyone interested in purchasing Heart of Thorns.
Guild Wars 2 was released in 2012. Despite having a rocky launch of their first-party sales, ArenaNet revealed they sold over 5 million copies as of August 2015. Once whey reached 5 million units sold, the company decided to turn the game into a free-to-play model, but kept the microtransactions (Gem Store) in place.
Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns will be available for the PC on October 23, 2015.
