Five years ago, the world was blessed with news that Steven Spielberg would be taking the helm for a live-action Halo television series. Still, after all the time that has passed, there’s no set date as to when the unnamed show will be released, nor has Showtime–the premium television network where the Halo series will air that’s known for titles like Homeland, Dexter, and Shameless–provided interested parties with many details as to why there is such a big delay. Only 343 Industries peaked their head out in July to keep people in the loop.

But, finally, there’s confirmation from Showtime itself. President and CEO, David Nevins, had this to say when speaking at the Television Critics Association winter press tour: “[It’s] still in very active development,” then providing those listening with some encouragement that he read some of the scripts and was pleased with what he saw. Gary Levine, president of programming for Showtime, reiterated what Nevins said by saying that the show is still in development, and, from what he’s seen so far, it looks pretty damn good. So although the world may have to wait a little bit longer for the Halo show to be released–Game of Thrones or Rick and Morty fans should be accustomed this–the final product may be worth the nerve racking pain right now.

There can be no doubt that Steven Spielberg is a busy man in Hollywood, with his most recent movie, The Post, being released in December of last year, and his next science fiction film, Ready Player One, coming out on March 30 of this year. His involvement in a variety of different projects may be one of the main reasons for the wait. Of course, Showtime hasn’t really given people a lot of details to go on in regards to the Halo show since the announcement five years ago, so this is all speculation on my part. Either way, I’m excited that the series is being taken so seriously, and that one of the great minds in Hollywood is playing such a pivotal role in its development–as slow as it may be.
