A fun featurette by Pottermore explores the ways the worlds of Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts are connected. Presented by Jude Law and Eddie Redmayne, who are playing Albus Dumbledore and Newt Scamander respectively in the upcoming movie Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald has made its world premiere in Paris November 8th, 2018 and will soon hit the rest of the world. The featurette explores how the magical worlds are tied together with scenes from all the movies. Let’s dive into a few!
Hogwarts returns to the screen again! The school was not shown in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them but was mentioned. We also see a young Newt take a very similar journey to Harry Potter. Both are mentored by Dumbledore and both live in a time of fear of a dark wizard. The Mirror of Erised makes an appearance. Although Dumbledore will not admit to what he sees in the mirror during the story of Harry Potter, perhaps he will in Fantastic Beasts.
Grindelwald is discussed much in the Harry Potter books. He and Dumbledore were once extremely close before the former turned dark. This will have fans excited to see the details of their relationship. Fans will also know that Dumbledore famously defeated Grindelwald and obtained the Elder Wand. Whether this confrontation happens in this Fantastic Beasts or another, it is eagerly anticipated!
The featurette also highlights the Deathly Hallows. The story of the Hallows only came about towards the end of the Harry Potter books, despite Harry having one of the Hallows – the Cloak of Invisibility – nearly the entire story. Readers know Grindelwald was obsessed with the Deathly Hallows, so it is no surprise the marketing for the new movie has featured the famous symbol prominently.
It will be exciting to see if more connections appear in the new movie! For now, fans will have to be satisfied with the featurette until they get to see the next chapter of the story unfold.
