Harvey Weinstein doesn’t stray away from controversy. This time, his name is going around because of a lawsuit he’s presented against his brother. However, the suit has nothing to do with the fact that Weinstein is jailed at Riker’s Island or facing his third rape trial; it has to do with his brother supposedly siphoning funds from Weinstein Co. after its collapse in 2017.
For additional context, the independent film distribution and production company filed for bankruptcy after it was revealed that Harvey was responsible for decades of sexual abuse against various people in the entertainment industry. After many prominent voices spoke out against the abuse, the company fell and could no longer financially stand on its own. And for this, Harvey is accusing brother Bob Weinstein and David Glasser of taking out money from the company for their own gain after realizing that it would go down. In fact, Harvey has used several instances of new evidence discovery to attack his brother directly.
Weinstein’s lawyers originally dealt with the lawsuit back in 2017, but it was put on hold in 2018 when the company had initially filed for bankruptcy. Then, in 2023, the case was reopened after AI International Holdings agreed to dismiss it and allowed Weinstein’s lawyers to pursue a separate suit using the same information. The lawyers describe Bob and David Glasser’s, a prominent film executive, actions as,
“Looting of a burning house”
Harvey Weinstein will be facing a new rape trial in April after the Court of Appeals in Manhattan overturned his conviction last year. In a different case, Weinstein was sentenced to 16 years for a Los Angeles rape, so the results of this case will be piled on top of that. However, Weinstein is also suffering from a litany of medical ailments, including diabetes, that have prevented him from making many appearances or pursuing these cases quickly.
