HBO Max is teaming up with Sarah Silverman and Seth Rogen for a Christmas-themed adult animated comedy series, Santa Inc.
Silverman and Rogen, who have previously worked together on Sarah Polley’s Take This Waltz, will be voicing the main characters of the eight-episode HBO Max series written by showrunner Alexandra Rushfield, who is the executive producer on Hulu’s Shrill.
Made up of half-hour episodes, the holiday-themed show centers around Candy Smalls (Silverman), the highest-ranking female elf in the North Pole. When the successor to Santa Claus (Rogen) is poached by Amazon on Christmas Eve, Candy has the chance to chase her ultimate dream — to become the first woman Santa Claus in the history of Christmas.
The series is part of Rogen’s Point Grey Pictures’ ongoing deal with Lionsgate aimed at developing and producing multiplatform content.
It is also the latest animated series to be added to HBO Max after British monarchy spoof The Prince from Gary Janetti, a reboot of The Boondocks and Close Enough from Regular Show creator J.G Quintel.
Suzanna Makkos, executive vice president original comedy and animation, said,
“I have long dreamed of a taking a beloved holiday tradition and adding a feminist agenda and some R rated comedy and when I read this script from Ali, with Seth and Sarah attached to voice, I knew that it was a perfect fit for us at Max.”
Lionsgate Head of Scripted Development, Scott Herbst, added,“ Sarah and Seth are the perfect comedy duo for this empowering and very funny animated series shepherded by the hysterical Alexandra Rushfield.”
The series, which is set to explore Christmas with a fresh twist, will be co-executive produced by Rushfield, Silverman, Amy Zvi, and Anomalisa’s Rosa Tran. Is it Christmas yet?
