HBO’s ‘Four Seasons’ Plan for The Last of Us Show Might Have Teased the 3rd Game (or even the 4th)

Second or third to the last?

The Last of Us Season 2 is one of the most awaited HBO shows this year. With a release date of April 2025 drawing ever closer, HBO deemed it a good time to reveal their plan for the series. Apparently, the show could take up to four seasons to wrap up and conclude itself, something that might have hinted at the future of the video game series as well.

The report came from an HBO executive, Francesca Orsi (EVP, Head of Drama). Speaking with Deadline, Francesca Orsi gave an estimate on what viewers can expect for The Last of Us show now that Season 2 is only a couple of months away.

“We don’t have a complete or final plan, but I think it’s looking like four seasons. I wouldn’t want to confirm that, but it’s looking like this season and then two more seasons after this, and we’re done,” according to Orsi in an interview with Deadline.

It’s not a confirmed number, of course, but there’s likely going to be at least a Season 3. It’s not clear yet where Season 2 will conclude in the video game’s story timeline, but HBO could very well stretch one game for two seasons depending on the ratings.

It just so happens that The Last of Us is one of the most popular TV adaptations ever for video games and is even considered a major success both critically and financially, for HBO. In fact, The Last of Us has given HBO its largest-ever viewership growth.

Thus, there are plenty of avenues HBO can take in planning out the endgame for The Last of Us. Still, regardless of these plans, The Last of Us show will have to heavily rely on the third and upcoming video game, The Last of Us Part 3.

Does This Mean The Last of Us Part 3 is Close?

Most of the time, the usual gap between HBO shows is 1-2 years, on some occasions, three years. Any longer than that and fans might become disengaged. Now, with The Last of Us Season 2 for HBO potentially concluding in June or July 2025, that leaves a 2027 or 2028 target for The Last of Us Season 3.

The problem with targeting for earlier releases is that the show will have to depend on the third game, The Last of Us Part 3. With Francesca Orsi hinting at 3-4 seasons for the show, that could mean the third game is well on its way and might even be released within 2-3 years.

Another scenario that might happen is that The Last of Us Part 2 (the video game) might get stretched to two seasons of the show in order to buy more time for The Last of Us Part 3 and eventually, HBO’s The Last of Us Season 4. At the moment, there’s no substantial news about The Last of Us Part 3‘s release date or development.

With HBO also hinting that the show adaptation will conclude in four seasons, that also means The Last of Us Part 3 might also really be the last one or that there will be a The Last of Us Part 4.
