Superman isn’t quite ready to hang up the red cape, says Aquaman. Despite rumors pointing to the contrary, Aquaman actor Jason Momoa has stated that Henry Cavill isn’t quitting the Superman role. Apparently, Momoa had a conversation about it with the 35-year-old English actor.
“I just talked to Henry… He’s absolutely not [leaving the character],” Momoa told Entertainment Tonight. “He loves the character. He’s not. One hundred percent.”
“It’s absolutely [not going to happen],” he continued to insist.
This is an interesting revelation, given that Momoa was previously unsure on Cavill’s status. In an earlier interview with Huffington Post, Momoa expressed sympathy towards Cavill and fellow co-star Ben Affleck should they choose to renounce their alter-egos. After all, he’s done three movies as Aquaman.
“If they’re both out, then listen: It’s just the place they’re at in their careers. I mean, how many has Henry done? He’s done three?” Momoa said. “Yeah, I mean, like, you want to move on. I think if I did… shit, I have done three.”
Momoa also theorized as to why the two superhero actors wanted to leave their capes behind.
“I mean, Henry wants to just expand on something,” the Aquaman actor said. “Ben is an amazing director that is of age, and probably he’s done enough. I don’t know how to speak on behalf of them, but I had the time of my life [on ‘Justice League’].”
And if anything is clear, it’s that Momoa did have a good time in these movies. The actor highly praised Zack Snyder, calling him his “soulmate” and his fellow Justice League actors.
If what Momoa says is true, fans of Henry Cavill’s Superman can let out a sigh of relief. Whether Cavill is due to return was recently cast in doubt across the internet. Alas, Affleck’s fate in the franchise is currently unknown.
In the meantime, fans can see Jason Momoa in action as Aquaman in the appropriately-titled Aquaman now in cinemas. The film has enjoyed respectable commercial success, particularly in China where it made $24.6 million on its first day. It’s also one of the better received DCEU films from critics, garnering a somewhat decent 74% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
The consensus reads: “Aquaman swims with its entertainingly ludicrous tide, offering up CGI superhero spectacle that delivers energetic action with an emphasis on good old-fashioned fun.”
