Mortal Kombat 1 received its second-year update a few months ago with the Khaos Reigns story expansion and Kombat Pack 2 characters. Ed Boon said that this update is just the start, teasing the third year of MK1 support coming in 2025/2026. However, Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Pack 3 and 2nd story DLC are reportedly canceled, meaning that we’re not going to see the following characters ever in this game:
- Jade
- Sonya
- Kano
- Cassie Cage
- Kung Jin
- Unknown Guest
Now before anything, take this with a grain of salt as this is only a leak and nothing more. The report is coming from thethiny, one of the reliable MK1 leakers that have been positively active for a long while now. All these characters are main fighters, with planned kameos remaining unknown.
Looking at the list, two things pop out: 1. Kombat kids were supposed to return. 2. Only 1 guest character was planned for Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Pack 3. Now the first one is logical based on the multiverse status of the the Mortal Kombat now, while lacking guest characters was to appreciate fans with more MK fighters as a nod to their support for the game; accordingly.
Based on the recent leaks, Mortal Kombat 1 is done after we receive the full Kombat Pack 2 fighters this year, one of which dropped a few days ago in the game. So if the game is canceled for the third year, it’s safe to assume that all the Kombat Pack 3 characters above are moved to the next big project, the Mortal Kombat 2.
NetherRealm Studios might be taking its time to develop its next game, which is most probably Injustice 3. Maybe the upcoming DC Universe James Gunn movies add more fuel to the hype fire, or maybe NetherRealm is going full focus on MK2? No one knows.
