The landscape for entertainment lets people watch TV shows and movies in various ways. We have streaming, physical media, cable, etc. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Aubrey Plaza revealed her feelings about streaming services, and her preference is buying shows and movies on iTunes. The hot take is something she is quite passionate about, as the topic makes her “really angry.”
At times, finding something to watch can be difficult depending on where and how it is available. What struck the topic of streaming for Aubrey Plaza was Top Chef season 20. She tried watching it and “couldn’t figure out how to f—ing get Hulu + Live.” She had gotten fed up with the process to the point of buying older movies or buying the entire series of Sopranos, even though it is free on HBO Max or by tomorrow, Max.
“And so what I like to do is go on iTunes and buy movies that are old. Or I’ll go on iTunes and just, like, buy the whole Sopranos series, and then my husband will be like, ‘You can literally watch that for free on HBO Max.'”
Aubrey Plaza Quits Streaming Services, Opts for Buying on iTunes
The landscape has made it impossible to avoid entirely. While Aubrey Plaza avoids watching on streaming services, she has starred in shows that are featured on major streamers. Last year, she starred in season 2 of The White Lotus. She has also starred in Hulu’s Little Demon. Still, she has had a big career beyond that with NBC’s Parks and Recreation and theatrically released movies with Dirty Grandpa and Emily the Criminal.
Streaming has become a hot topic in Hollywood. While it may have benefits, the lack of residuals and fewer episodes per season for shows has made it harder for people to make a living who make the shows and movies. It is one of the main reasons the WGA strike commenced, as writers have a harder time making a living without residuals. The WGA has been negotiating for a deal to give residuals, along with expanding writer rooms and having a writer on set for any script-related questions or problems.
