A robbery attempt was foiled last Friday, when a brave barista, Nick Grant, stepped in to prevent the would-be thief from stealing a customer’s backpack in a cafe in San Francisco’s Mission District. The masked thief entered the establishment, Carlin’s Cafe, and pulled a weapon from his right pocket on a regular patron sat at a table. Without hesitating, the robber then snatched the backpack from the customer, but things didn’t quite go to plan for the would-be thief when the ‘hero‘ barista bravely intervened. The incident was captured via an on-site security camera, and was posted on Reddit earlier today.
As the video clip was captured with a security camera, it’s worth noting that there is no audio in the security footage. Nevertheless, we’re still able to get a good sense of what occurred during the incident on Friday, 13 December, 2024. Specifically, the viral clip begins with a shot of the cafe in question, with barista Nick Grant behind the counter in a khaki green beanie hat and black tee. The entrance doors swing open and the masked suspect dressed in black enters the cafe and quickly approaches the sole customer, sat at a table.
The suspect pulls a can of pepper spray from his right pocket and proceeds to seize the elderly customer’s backpack. When the customer realises and attempts to retrieve the backpack from the assailant, the robber unloads the bear mace into the patron’s face. It’s at this point when the barista springs into action and intervenes. As the masked assailant is backing away from the customer with the backpack in his grasp, barista Nick Grant comes to the elderly customer’s aid by slamming a supply cart directly into the robber’s back. Grant then begins pushing the suspect away from the door, and punching him in a bid to try and incapacitate the suspect who is armed with a can of bear mace.
However, it’s clear that Grant gets doused by the bear mace as the incident continues to escalate. The suspect is clearly not going down without fight, as the masked assailant continues to throw punches at the heroic barista. Fortunately, as the physical altercation unfolds, a passerby named Jim Carrol, who is on the phone to police and saw the suspect enter the cafe, decides to step into the cafe and help Grant.
During the tussle, Carrol manages to snatch the pepper spray from the assailant. Meanwhile, other passersby step into the coffee shop to help block the doors so that the suspect doesn’t escape. Finally, Grant manages to incapacitate the would-be thief and pins the man to the ground in a headlock.
Right at the end of the clip, we also get a short interview with the courageous barista Nick Grant, who declares: “I’m a little sore this morning. I’m still coughing out bear mace, but Im good. Right on. Thank you so much. I’m not gonna let anyone like that stop me from doing what I love.”
After witnessing the heroic footage, it’s safe to say that the internet is incredibly impressed with Nick Grant’s brave and courageous actions. Over on Reddit, netizens were quick to chime in with their thoughts and reactions to the inspiring clip.
A second commenter added, “That barista is a full on hero!“
A third Redditor, meanwhile, weighed in with, “Man rolled out a bakers dozen“.
Thankfully, seven minutes after the would-be thief was incapacitated, the police arrived on the scene and charged the suspect — 42-year-old Amir Moner of Concord — with attempted robbery and other charges related to the incident. Shortly later, Amir Moner was booked into the San Francisco County Jail.
Speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle, Nick Grant reflected on the incident, saying: “I saw the thing happening and only had a moment to act. I threw the cart into the guy, saw he had something (in his hand). I thought it might be a gun, but it was bear Mace. Unfortunately for this guy (Moner), he walked into the wrong situation at the wrong time.”
