At the recent PlayStation State of Play event, Hideo Kojima, along with the head of PlayStation Studios Herman Hulst, announced that Kojima Productions is working on a new action-espionage game. This is Kojima’s first return to the action-espionage gaming genre since being unceremoniously fired by Konami after the release of Metal Gear Solid 5.
Kojima’s New Action-Espionage Game (Metal Gear Successor?)
Hideo Kojima is quoted during the event as saying that this new action-espionage game will be a “brand new, original IP,” which means any fans out there holding their breath for Hideo to return to the Metal Gear franchise will have to keep holding it because that’s not happening anytime soon. Of course, in classic current Kojima fashion, he also mentions during the event that he wants this game to be “also a movie at the same time.” He said something similar about his ongoing horror project with Jordan Peele, OD, which received its announcement at the recent Game Awards.
Combine both of those with the upcoming Death Stranding 2 which is also certain to be part-movie and long cutscene fans must be absolutely rejoicing right now. As for the release window on this new action-espionage game or any other major details, unfortunately, Kojima isn’t even willing to give out a name just yet. He also says production won’t begin in earnest until after Death Stranding 2, which just got a release window of 2025 at the same State of Play, so this new Metal Gear spiritual successor is still a ways off.
