ABC has officially released the first trailer for Alaska Daily, an upcoming drama series starring Hilary Swank. The show, created by Tom McCarthy, marks Swank’s return to television for the first time since 2020, where she starred as Emma Green in Netflix’s Away.
ABC’s Alaska Daily will star Hilary Swank in the lead role as award-winning investigative journalist Eileen Fitzgerald who moves from New York to Anchorage, Alaska following an unfortunate fall from grace, leaving behind a high-profile life and embarking on “a journey to find both personal and professional redemption,” per Deadline. As a reporter for the eponymous Alaska Daily, Eileen is tasked with investigating a cold case regarding the disappearances of several indigenous women, whose stories lead Eileen into the city’s dark underbelly and uncover secrets that many would rather stay buried forever. Along with Hilary Swank, Jeff Perry (Scandal), Grace Dove (How It Ends), Matt Malloy (Changing Lanes), Meredith Holzman (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), and Ami Park (This Is Us) are also set to star in the new ABC series.
‘Alaska Daily’ and Hilary Swank’s Return to Television
Alaska Daily’s premiere on ABC in October will officially mark Hilary Swank’s return to television acting, with her most recent role before the new show being NASA astronaut Emma Green on Netflix’s Away, a short-lived series about a crew of astronauts undertaking a three-year mission to Mars. Before that, she held a minor role on Netflix’s BoJack Horseman, but Swank’s role in Alaska Daily marks her “first significant starring TV role on a broadcast channel,” according to The A.V. Club.
When asked about her decision to return to television, Hilary Swank told Deadline the following:
“You know, I love people and I love what makes them tick. And I love people who persevere through adversity. I love outsiders. I love the underdog…What makes us all one person? At the heart of these stories, all everyone wants is to be seen and everyone deserves justice. I think a lot of the roles that I choose have that theme in one way or another and I feel like Eileen Fitzgerald is a truth seeker. She’s an investigative truth seeker, and she wants to make sure that justice is done and that people see the truth in situations. I feel that that aligns with what people in the world want right now, they don’t want to be lied to anymore.”
