We humans have created the domestic pet species we see today by selectively breeding their wild ancestors until the Dogs, Cats, Birds, and what have you that we are familiar with today became accustomed to us and more docile. In doing so these particular breeds of animals ended up keeping many of their juvenile features well into adulthood and as such, we have come to think of them as extremely…. what was the word? Cute. That’s it. And as such we adore our pets. We idolize them and create products for and of them ranging from funny internet videos to fantasy animal outdoor collection simulators but rarely do we get to see video games directly about our furry friends. There was Dog’s Life on the PS2 but are there any cat games? HK is coming to fill that void in your heart.
HK is a video game where you play as a platforming cat in what appears to be a future, possibly dystopian, robot inhabited Hong Kong-esque cityscape. HK may or may not be an abbreviation for or allusion to Hong Kong as the developers have stated that one of the main inspirations for the game’s city is Kowloon Walled City (a now dissolved ungoverned mini city-state) which used to be located in Hong Kong.
The developers are a small team of two people and two cats from the south of France, and while they have an impressive looking game already it will be awhile before any of us get our hands on it. In the developers own words: “Q: When can I play this game? A: Not soon, we are still at the very beginning of the creation process (pre-prod / R&D). We need a few more years to make what we want.” Till then we can all still get excited over all of the awesome videos and images the developer’s post of their work in progress at over at their devblog.
