There’s no doubt that games like Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail release a bucket load of new content all the time. Most of this is the form of new characters; unfortunately, it feels like more and more they’re lacking any sort of originality. In fact, it seems HoYoverse is beginning to just copy and paste designs over with a couple of small changes. More specifically, the dev team released a new character in HSR, Black Swan, who’s got players convinced they’ve seen her somewhere before. Is she the Welkin Moon Lady? Is she Aponia? She’s definitely similar enough to both to not rule anything out.
Confusion Sparks as HoYoverse Releases Genshin Look-Alike In Honkai Star Rail
Don’t get me wrong, it’s awesome that new characters are releasing for the HoYoverse games so frequently, but at some point, you have to come up with some new ideas rather than just reusing older ones. With so many characters, it’s to be expected that some of them will look just a bit too similar, but come on. The Welkin Moon Lady and Black Swan look like they’re supposed to be the same character, and that’s not even taking into account “inspiration” that easily could have been drawn from different games as well. Where Black Swan might seen as a great-great-grandchild of the Welkin Moon Lady, Aponia from Honkai Impact 3rd is definitely a a not-so-distant cousin.
Now, this surely isn’t the first time we’ve seen HoYoverse being “lazy” with their character designs. Whether it’s in Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail, or even Honkair Impact 3rd, we’ve seen it. Remember the Unknown God in Genshin Impact? Give it a quick comparison to Honkai Impact 3rd‘s Herrscher of Void. They’re almost too similar. Their faces, eyes, and even hair are nearly exact. The only difference is their clothes, though, in this case, the Welkin Moon Lady and Black Swan have quite a bit more in common.
You can even check out Raiden EI and Raiden Mai, obviously meant to be similar, but they’re really just copies of each other. If that’s not enough, let’s check out Al Haitham and Su. Not only do they look alike, but they act super similar as well. The list goes on and on, and HoYoverse just keeps displaying its lack of originality. Will it ever change? Will we see new characters someday who haven’t been copied from other games? Who knows.
