A U.S. Navy sailor in Virginia was left horrified discovering an unexpected item inside a Monster Energy Drink.

A dead, decomposing rat was found inside a Monster Energy drink can that was purchased at a Norfolk convenience store, according to John Witt, who spoke with News 3. Witt, a Norfolk Navy sailor, says he reached out to the Food and Drug Administration to file a report, and WTKR News 3 have reached to Monster Energy for a comment. “I’m definitely not going to be able to drink anything from a closed can,” he said. “I’m never going to be able to drink anything that I can’t see again.”

According to a voice recording shared by WTKR News 3, Witt said he vomited several times after making the discovery. “I’ve just ingested that. I just had drunk that,” he said. Witt then reported the incident to his chain of command, who referred him to the emergency room in Portsmouth. He said medical staff there confirmed it was a rat and that he had ingested it.

Medical staff told Witt that, based on the contents of the Monster Energy Drink, he would likely be safe. He was also informed that his antibodies should be able to “fight it off.” He said doctors planned to monitor him over the next 48 hours as a precaution to check for any potential side effects following the incident.

“It’s been very traumatic for me,” Witt said. He added that, following the incident, he does not plan to drink anything he cannot fully see.

The incident is gaining attention because it involves a report of a rat being found inside a sealed Monster Energy Drink, raising concerns among some viewers about product safety and quality control. The nature of the claim has contributed to its circulation online and prompted broader discussion about food and beverage safety standards.

Another added sarcastically, “Sue them until you own the company, then sue yourself as well, then sell the company and sue the buyer.”

Other users said the incident influenced their views on energy drinks, with some advising others to avoid them following what Witt reported finding. “Energy drinks are so bad for you anyways. Just drop these drinks all together. A regular soda has more caffeine than coffee. Do you really need more than that?” one person wrote. Another added, “ONE MORE REASON I DONT DRINK ENERGY DRINKS.” A different user commented that the video would change their own habits, writing, “Yup always pouring my sodas into a cup from now on!”

The video prompted strong reactions online, with many users expressing sympathy for Witt and saying it influenced how they view energy drinks.
