Horror movie ‘Ready or Not‘ stormed through its opening day this past Wednesday. The film opened to an impressive $2 million box office receipt, according to Variety. The picture opened in 2,244 theatres across North America this week and the mid-week release seems to have sat well with movie-goers.
However, $730,000 of this sum came from the Tuesday night previews. Yet, this should not be dismissed as that is an impressive figure on its own.
What’s Ready or Not About?
The plot is summarised by the report as centering:
“…on a bride’s wedding night turning deadly when her new in-laws force her into a strange game of hide and seek.”
The comparison to Jordan Peele’s Get Out is apparent in its blend of comedy and horror, as our own writer Damian Gordon points out in the title of his review. Like the aforementioned film, Ready or Not seems to be on the right track with a critic consensus of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and a rating of B+ from audiences on CinemaScore.
Financial Performance
The report continues to project that:
“Forecasts for the low-budget film had been in the $8 million to $12 million range for its first five days of release.”
What becomes clear to me is the pattern it follows with other horror movies. Ready or Not is a low budget production, like many horrors. We see it follows the trend that horror is bankable, no matter the quality of the film. However, seeing the film being praised by audiences and critics alike is great.
Ready or Not is on an upward trajectory. We will see how far that rocket can go as the film reaches a print count of 2,840 today. Will this be a contender for film of the year or merely a moment of hype to blow over in a few weeks? Only time will tell.
