House of the Dragon is officially getting a season 3 on Max, and the second one’s not even out yet. Three days before season 2 is set to premiere, news has come from HBO that House Targaryen will be getting at least three seasons. Given that the Game of Thrones spin-off is HBO’s most popular show by far, the news isn’t surprising. If the original show is any indication, we’ll be following House Targaryen’s draconic family drama for quite a while.
Premiering on HBO in August 2022, House of the Dragon holds the record for the biggest original show premiere between HBO and Max. The show, based on Fire & Blood by George R. R. Martin, follows the Targaryen dynasty around 100 years after they united the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. The first season takes place about two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, and like the original show, it’s filled to the brim with sex, blood, drama, and intrigue – just with more dragons this time. The season left off with the Targaryens on the brink of civil war after dragon-based infighting ended with Prince Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) killing one of his own family members.
House of the Dragon Gets Season 3 Order Ahead of Season 2
Season 2 of House of the Dragon is going to have its hands full with that civil war, but there’s no word on what season 3 will entail. Season 2 hasn’t even been released yet, but HBO’s programming and drama series chief Francesca Orsi called it “phenomenal” in a statement addressing the season 3 renewal.
“George [R. R. Martin], Ryan [Condal], and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast, and crew, have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season…We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season two, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for season three.”

In other words, HBO’s Game of Thrones empire isn’t going anywhere any time soon, and it’s not hard to see why. Fans will remember that the original show got eight seasons total – no matter how big of a flop the last season was – and then launched a spinoff almost immediately.
