After months of effort, 25-year-old Leo Humphries from Houston, Texas, was ecstatic to finally get an interview for his dream job, only to discover that an AI would be conducting the interview. Uploading the interview to TikTok, Humphries had dressed in his Sunday best to begin a video call with who he was told via email would be the ‘actual hiring manager.’ Instead, he got a buggy, broken, non-responsive AI chatbot that could do nothing but repeat gibberish.
“I WAS SO HAPPY YALL 😭😭😭😭,” Humphries sadly groans in the upload’s description. After the AI interview started, the so-called ‘hiring manager’ went on with varying forms of the incomprehensive phrase, “When when when let’s, let’s circle back.” This wasn’t just some small business but a “national company,” and Humphries claims he went through communication with multiple people before the interview happened. With all faith now lost, the interviewee hopes that this all might have been some prank and that someone from the company would eventually join the call — which never happened.
Humphries later released an update video on TikTok, showcasing the ridiculous follow-up email he received on the day of the interview. The message appeared to be written out by an AI and contained multiple errors, calling him by the wrong name and saying that the interview that day was “yesterday.” It gets worse; the email was filled with generic corporate speak, saying how Humphries had wonderful energy and personality and that the call was an “enjoyable and memorable experience.” Unfortunately, he was ultimately rejected for the job, which might be a good thing after the dumpster fire of an AI interview.
Of course, the internet found this Houston man’s whole situation hilarious, disturbing, and sad. “This is the third glitched out AI interview I’ve seen, we really are living in hell 😭,” remarks a TikTok user. “Your face changing to sadness and dissappointment 😭😭😭 im so sorry,” laments another. “But did you tell him about a time when when when?” jokes a third. “That’s a black mirror episode,” a fourth adds in.
Redditors felt the same sentiment when news of Humphries’ awful AI interview made its way into a post. “I’ll live in a cardboard box before I get interviewed by a f**king AI bot,” growls a commenter. “I would virtually walk out,” chimes in another. While many more were upset by the whole ordeal, some wondered if they could have manipulated the bot if they were in Humphries’ shoes. After all, it’s not like the buggy, glitchy thing would have known better anyway. Whatever the case, it’s very unfortunate Humphries couldn’t get his dream job. Hopefully, he’ll find a similar position at a different company that actually cares about its applicants before forcing them through an AI-slop interview.
