‘How Can Anyone Respect This Millionaire Hypocrite?’: Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders Faces Backlash After Calling for Elon Musk to Pay More Into Social Security

The millionaire calling out the billionaire

Sen. Bernie Sanders posted on X calling the campaign finance system corrupt, arguing that a $5 bribe is illegal while $50 million from billionaires is allowed. The post quickly triggered strong accusations of hypocrisy.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders called for wealthy Americans, including Elon Musk, to contribute more to Social Security. Sanders argued that high earners should pay Social Security taxes on more of their earnings. He linked that proposal to his Social Security Expansion Act and contrasted wealthy Americans with struggling seniors.

Should Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, pay the same amount of taxes into Social Security as a fireman or nurse? Of course not.

The answer isn't complicated. Let's lift the cap and make the wealthiest people in America pay their fair share to strengthen Social Security. pic.twitter.com/AR2jBQLmVR

In the video, Sanders said the United States now has greater income and wealth inequality than ever before. He argued that lawmakers should consider that disparity when discussing Social Security’s future.

Sanders said Republicans, Democrats, and independents outside Washington support the proposal. He then turned to how much wealthy Americans contribute to Social Security.

“Should Elon Musk pay the same percentage of his income” as a firefighter or nurse, Sanders asked. He answered his own question by saying, “Nobody” believes that makes sense.

Sanders said people at the top “have never, ever had it so good” while seniors struggle. He concluded by urging lawmakers to make more earnings subject to Social Security taxes, saying they should “lift that cap.”

Bernie Sanders Faces Backlash Over Elon Musk Social Security Push

Sanders’ remarks sparked criticism focused on his own wealth and competing views about fairness in Social Security contributions.

One X user asked, “How can anyone respect this millionaire hypocrite!?!” Another wrote, “Always hilarious watching the millionaires call out the billionaires. To the working class, you’re also part of the problem Bernie.”

A separate response questioned Sanders’ argument directly, “So, Elon should pay more into SS than you… and you should pay more than me? Fair is a proportionate amount, not different amount on a case by case basis.”

Another user turned attention toward Sanders’ own wealth, writing, “Bernie/ Nobody needs three houses. Sell two and donate your fair share to the homeless and poor.”

One response backed making Musk contribute substantially more. The user wrote, “Elon should not pay the same as a fireman or nurse. He should pay until there is nothing left to pay. Lift the cap.”

The exchange has kept the debate over Social Security contributions in the spotlight. Sanders continues to argue that the earnings cap should be raised, while critics say his own finances undermine that message.
