‘How Do You Have Constituents Who Are Illegal Aliens?’: Rep. Gwen Moore Faces Backlash After Kansas ICE Visit

One word stuck.

Rep. Gwen Moore posted Wednesday that she had just left an ICE detention facility in Leavenworth, Kansas, after checking on people she called her constituents. According to the post, the detainees said they were being treated well, though Moore said she could not determine why they were held and described them as asylum seekers and mothers with no criminal records. Online users reacted after focusing on her use of the word constituents.

I just left the ICE detention facility in Leavenworth, Kansas to check on my constituents who are being detained.

While my constituents said they were being treated well, I can’t figure out why they’re here.

The clip shows Moore standing outside a gated facility lined with fencing and razor wire as she speaks to the camera. She says she is “just leaving the Midwest” and that “we spent a couple hours inside.” She then says, “The good news is that the people we visited said that they’re being treated like human beings,” followed by, “we can’t figure out why they’re here.”

Moore continues in the footage that “we think that this is a money-making private prison that’s operating this facility,” and refers to “value in incarcerating people.” The video does not show the interior tour or the people she said she visited.

In the post, she wrote that those she met were “asylum seekers and moms with no criminal records,” and that “the company makes $307,000 off each bed,” adding that “profit is driving ICE, not any public safety concerns.” Those details have not been independently confirmed in the clip.

When “Constituents” Became the Story

Many replies focused on Moore’s use of the word “constituents.” One widely shared response asked, “How do you have ‘constituents’ who are illegal aliens? Are you admitting that illegals voted for you?”

Another wrote, “Constituents are voters. Illegals should not be voting or considered constituents.”

A third said, “She says ‘my constituents’ but she really means ‘my illegal voters who keep my party and me in power’.”

Other commenters put it more directly: “They’re not your constituents,” and “If they’re in ICE detention, they aren’t your constituents. Only US citizens are your constituents.”

The exchange has since become part of a broader online argument over whom elected officials speak for when they visit detention facilities. Moore’s post remains one more flashpoint in the ongoing debate over ICE operations and congressional oversight.
