Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman surprised both sides of the political aisle on September 9 when the Democrat appeared by video at the Republican midterm Convention in Dallas, Texas. Fetterman used the unexpected appearance to praise Republican Senator Dave McCormick and even promise to work with President Donald Trump.
The appearance immediately added fuel to the long-running conversation about where Fetterman fits within the Democratic Party, especially as his positions on Israel, Iran, and immigration as a whole have increasingly put him at odds with fellow Democrats. Commenters were also largely divided in their responses to the situation on X.
The video was reposted to Nick Sortor’s X profile, where you can hear Senator Fetterman say to the camera, “Yes, I am Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania. Yes, I am a Democrat, and why am I here talking to you today? Well, because I am a common-sense Democrat.” He then explains his personal morals against extremes in socialism, followed by his personal endorsement for Dave McCormick.
He then comments on the US Steel Mill, seeing as he was standing in front of it, and also announces his plans to work with President Donald Trump. He can be heard saying, “That’s the kind of thing that we will work together, and we’ll work with President Trump, to fight and defend the steel way of life right here in the Steel Valley.”
Fetterman’s willingness to work with Republicans has increasingly separated him from other members of his party. He has broken with Democrats on several major issues and votes, including Israel, the way with Iran, and government spending, while becoming a frequent critic of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.
Despite the speculation surrounding his political future, Fetterman recently reiterated that he does not intend to become a Republican and instead described hiself as a Democrat willing to talk with people across the aisle.
Comments and Reactions to John Fetterman’s GOP Convention Appearance
Republicans reacting online appeared both surprised and entertained by Fetterman’s appearance, with one commenter writing, “He might just be the only real Democrat left in Congress.” Similarly, another commenter wrote, “He’s finally saw the light!”
Not everyone on the right was ready to embrace him, however, with a different user writing, “Until he starts voting like a Republican, no thanks.” Even Nick Sortor praised Fetterman’s remarks while criticizing his voting record in his own post, writing, “Dude’s gonna end up being kicked out of the Democrat Party.”
Whether Fetterman’s cross-party approach changes his relationship with Democrats remains to be seen, but his appearance at a Republican convention certainly gave both sides something new to argue about.
