Florida authorities arrested Kissimmee Mayor Jackie Espinosa Wednesday on grand theft and fraud charges tied to COVID-19 relief grants. Investigators allege she improperly benefited from funds intended for struggling local businesses. Her arrest followed an ethics sanction and an unsuccessful impeachment effort, renewing questions about whether she should remain in office.
According to News 6, the allegations involve Kissimmee’s Business Boost 2.0 program. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said Espinosa submitted three applications seeking $50,000 for herself and family members. She filed them when the program opened in September 2025. “It was not designed to help government officials enrich themselves,” Uthmeier said.
Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia said seven businesses at properties owned or managed by Espinosa’s family received $90,000 in grants. Of that amount, $50,000 went to her businesses, while tenants received the remaining $40,000.
The Florida Commission on Ethics censured Espinosa in September and recommended a $2,000 fine. City commissioners also deadlocked 2-2 on whether to pursue an impeachment trial.
At Thursday’s hearing, a judge granted Espinosa $70,000 bond and scheduled a December 1 pretrial conference. Her attorney, Migdalia Perez, denied criminal wrongdoing and vowed to challenge the charges.
Kissimmee Mayor Jackie Espinosa’s Arrest Sparks Calls for Accountability
On Reddit, users debated the allegations, political accountability and whether investigators were applying the same standards to other officials.
“This isn’t acceptable behavior, she should be impeached and charged,” one user wrote. Another demanded legal consequences if prosecutors proved the allegations, stating, “If she’s guilty, then throw the book at her.”
Others argued that political affiliation should not determine accountability. “Corruption should be punished regardless of affiliation,” one response stated. A separate user added, “I’ll vote for a better person over a corrupt one regardless of political positions.”
However, some offered contrasting views. “And even if the allegations are true, she’s still a better pick than a Republican,” one argued. Another questioned the investigation’s scope, writing, “I just wonder if it’s all selective and no Republicans are being investigated.”
As of Thursday, Gov. Ron DeSantis had not suspended Espinosa. Under Kissimmee’s charter, Vice Mayor Angela Eady would assume the position during any suspension.
