Taking on the treacherous waves requires a sturdy ship, that’s for sure. But for pirates, style also comes a close second. Any seasoned pirates believe their ship should also be able to intimidate any passerby and enemies that dare to cross their path! Well, thankfully, Sea of Thieves not only lets you buy a ship but also change its skin to your liking. Ready to open your sail and showcase your best jolly roger?

Yes, you can buy your own ship from the “Play” option in the main menu. Instead of selecting the “Charter a Ship” option, pick “My Ships” instead. You’ll be taken to the “Choose your Ship Type” screen and shown all the ship types available. Sea of Thieves currently offers three types of ship to buy, just like the ones that you charter:

  • Sloop (250,000 Gold): The smallest ship. Very weak but the most agile, as it’s easy to maneuver and operate. Perfect for solo pirates or two-man crews.
  • Brigantine (375,000 Gold): A medium ship that fits three-pirate crews. Resilient but can be hard to utilize for small teams.
  • Galleon (500,000 Gold): The largest ship you can take in Sea of Thieves. Slow, very hard to sink, and armed to the teeth with the most canons. Nevertheless, it needs proper coordination between crewmates to control.

You can buy more than one ship, but you must unlock the Legendary Ship Title first. That can be done by raising your purchased ship’s Class to Level 50 in any Ship Alignment.

Purchasing a ship will turn you into a Captain and open additional cosmetic customization options for your vessel. Any battle damage the ship you purchased received will also stick, although only their visual. You can remove them by talking to the Shipwright Shop vendor NPC or through the “My Ships” menu.

Once you’ve selected your ship and gathered your crewmates, you’ll wake up at an Outpost. Here, you can speak to various NPCs to get quests and buy skins including for ship customizations. Everything related to your ship is located at a Shipwright Shop, which is always found at an Outpost or secret Trading Company island’s dock.

While most ship customization items can be purchased at a Shipwright Shop, others are acquired from special means. Occasionally, Rare will drop some limited events or give away special skin, like the Halo-themed Spartan Ship items seen above. The premium currency store Pirate Emporium also sells a number of exclusive customization items for your Ship. The Emporium should be found in the middle of any Outposts, above the Order of Souls tent.

After you’ve bought the skins you wanted, interact with the Ship Customisation Chest in front of the vendor. This allows you to change your ship skin in Sea of Thieves. In total, you can change the looks of eight different parts of your ship:

  • Cannons.
  • Cannon flares or smokes.
  • Capstan, the wheel to raise and lower the Ship’s anchor.
  • Figurehead, decorative statue on the front of your Ship.
  • Flag on top of your Ship.
  • Hull.
  • Sails.
  • Wheel.

For the ships you’ve bought, you can even name them which will adorn the ship’s Crest. To do so, buy the Ship Renaming Deed from the Pirate Emporium for 499 Ancient Coins and then access the “My Ship” menu again.
