After weathering a massive Whiteout in Chapter 2, you must find the ruined city of Winterhome northeast of New London. Chapter 3 is a calm section where you can prepare yourself for the colonization of this abandoned settlement. As usual, you need to decide between siding with the Stalwarts or the Pilgrims. If you choose to go all in on Oil, it will be more consistent to salvage Winterhome in Frostpunk 2‘s Chapter 4. In this case, you need to make a temporary settlement to harvest all the Cores in this area.
Frostpunk 2 Chapter 4 Walkthrough
If you decide to salvage Winterhome at the start of Chapter 4, you still need to send some people to colonize this ruined city in Frostpunk 2. Your goal is to gather 40 Cores so you can upgrade your generator and weather the next Whiteout. The Stalwarts will be happy with your decision, while the Pilgrims will be enraged.
At this point, you can make another decision. You can send a group of people from all factions equally or include Pilgrim leaders as part of the colonists. Since you already side with the Stalwarts, you might as well go all in and choose the second option. This will also prevent the group from making problems in New London, but you do have to pay extra attention to Winterhome.
How To Salvage Winterhome
The biggest problem you have to deal with in Chapter 4 is the toxic gas that permeates Winterhome. As if things aren’t bad enough, the toxicity will increase as time progresses. Your workforce will grow sick, and Disease will spread in this new colony.
Here’s what you need to do to mitigate this problem in Chapter 4:
- Build Hospitals in expanded Housing Districts
- Pass regulations regarding Contagion Prevention
- Provide enough Heat and keep Squalor down
Unfortunately, these measures will only keep down Disease slightly, and you need to expect that people will get sick. The best thing you can do is to send more workforce into this colony and build as many Extraction districts as possible to gather all the Cores.
Since you side with the Stalwarts, you will also unlock the ability to research Automated Workforce Factory. You can build this structure in Industrial Districts, and it lets you use machines to frostbreak a path toward the Core nodes in Winterhome.
How To Stop Disturbances in Chapter 4
Although it is for the greater good, people are not okay with being exposed to toxic gas. Tension and conflict will arise within Winterhome, and you must keep Crime down in Chapter 4. To do this, you need to build Watchtowers in expanded Housing Districts.
Hopefully, you have already unlocked this structure. However, if you haven’t you can research the idea under the Society section. Note that you need to build Surveillance Watchtowers, not the other alternatives. Since you must construct two towers, you will need to expand two Housing Districts.
How To Get 40 Cores & Build Hyperdrive Regulator
Technically, your main goal in Chapter 4 is to build the Generator: Hyperdrive Regulator upgrade. The hardest material to find is the 40 Cores. While the Winterhome holds the biggest number of Cores, you can also get extra by exploring Frostland.
Note that you do not have to mine all the Cores in this ruined city. You just have to get 40 of them, and you can leave. That’s why I highly recommend upgrading your Logistics Districts so you can send your Frostland Teams and get those rare resources.
